5 Causes of Unwanted Wrinkles

Practically all wrinkles are unwanted, but they are an unfortunate part of the aging process. Understanding what causes wrinkles can give us a better idea of how to slow down the aging process while also reducing the signs of aging. Overall, there are five main reasons for the development of wrinkles: poor diet and exercise habits, genetics, environmental factors, stress, and smoking.

As we enter our thirties, most of us have fine lines and maybe a few wrinkles from repeated facial expressions such as smiling and squinting. The timeline is not exact, as the development of these wrinkles has a great deal to do with our genetic makeup. Our parents and grandparents skin properties play a large part in whether we wrinkle earlier or later than the average person does.

Damage from environmental factors like pollution and ultraviolet radiation from sun exposure is a principal reason of prematurely aging skin and the increase of wrinkling. UV rays can actually damage the DNA cells and generate free radicals while lowering the skin’s immunity and breaking down elastin and collagen. Reducing your risk of skin cancer, wrinkles and leathery-textured skin depend greatly on your limiting sun exposure and wearing proper sunscreen at all times.

Poor dietary habits and lack of exercise can lead to wrinkles and overall bad health. By increasing the amount of physical activity in each day, it can help to reduce the effects of stress and make a person look and feel better. Eating a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and low in starches and fats can also provide a great deal of benefit. When a person doesn’t eat healthy food and isn’t getting the recommended daily amounts of vitamins and minerals, free radicals build up in the body and can damage cells and lead to heart disease, cancer, and other degenerative diseases.

Chronic stress is a leading cause of wrinkles and premature aging as the stress works on the body in a negative fashion by affecting our hormone system and increasing inflammation in our cells. Reducing stress in our lives by making sure we are scheduling time to relax and have fun is essential to living a healthy life. Try to maintain perspective and prioritize your responsibilities – eliminating the ones that either are unnecessary or bring you added stress.

Finally, smoking cigarettes is damaging to not only your health, but also to your skin cells. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke can lead to deep wrinkles and leathery skin. While you can never completely eradicate the effects of smoking, quitting now will greatly improve skin tone and fine lines.
